Nvidia Admits There's a Manufacturing Defect in Some RTX 5090 and 5070 Ti Devices

KOMPUTER JADUL-, Nvidia confirmed that some of the GPUs from the RTX 50 series that were shipped to buyers were defective in production.

These GPUs include the RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, and even some of the RTX 5070 Ti series. The production defect that occurred was the loss of a number of rendering units in them, as quoted by detikINET from The Verge, Monday (2/24/2025).

"We identified a very rare problem that occurred in less than 0.5% of the RTX 5090/5090D and 5070 Ti which had one less ROP (render output unit). The impact on average performance was 4%, and there was no impact on AI and Computing capabilities. Affected consumers can contact the graphics card manufacturer for a replacement. This production anomaly has been fixed," said Nvidia Global PR Director Ben Berraondo.

From a number confirmed by Nvidia, there should not be many graphics cards affected by this problem, considering that currently the stock of RTX 5090 on the market is only a little.

Although the number is very small, this problem is widespread in various graphics card manufacturers, from Zotac, MSI, Gigabyte, Manli, and even Nvidia Founders Edition cards are affected by the problem of missing ROPs.

The impact on GPU performance should also not be too noticeable, which has also been confirmed by a number of users whose graphics cards are affected by this problem.

However, this problem adds to the long list of problems that occur with Nvidia's most expensive GPU (consumer class). For example, driver problems that cause black screens, or melted power connectors.

To check whether your graphics card is also affected, you can use the GPU-Z application, and see if the graphics card has the appropriate number of ROPs, which is 176.
