Komputer Jadul-, The world's first three-folding cellphone made in China has finally been launched globally. The Huawei Mate XT, which was first released in its home country, was brought to an event in Malaysia on Tuesday (2/18).
Quoted from AP, analysts said the emergence of the Huawei Mate XT was a symbolic victory for the Chinese technology giant amidst the onslaught of the United States (US) blockade.
However, obstacles in terms of price, durability, supply, and application limitations will likely make things difficult for Huawei.
At the launch event in Kuala Lumpur, Huawei said the Mate XT would be priced at 3,499 euros. Although it is called a three-folding cellphone, the cellphone with three screen panels can only be folded twice.
Huawei claims the Mate XT is the thinnest folding cellphone in the world with a thickness of 3.6 millimeters. The screen when opened measures a total of 10.2 inches or similar to the iPad made by Apple.
"Currently, Huawei stands alone as an innovator with its tri-fold design," said Bryan Ma, VP of device research at market intelligence firm IDC, as quoted by AP, Wednesday (2/19/2025).
"Huawei has managed to bring this innovation despite not having access to Google chips and services. These things are big obstacles in front of Huawei," Ma continued.
The Huawei Mate XT was first released in China on September 20, 2024, the same day Apple launched the iPhone 16 series. However, with a price that can make your wallet empty, Ma said the Huawei Mate XT "is not a mainstream product that will appeal to the masses".
Ma said Huawei has dominated the foldable phone market in China with a 49% market share. In the global market, its market share is 23% or smaller than Samsung which had a 33% market share in 2024.
According to IDC's prediction, sales of foldable phones in the world could jump to 45.7 million units in 2028 from around 20 million units last year.
Although many Android phones have introduced foldable phones, Apple has yet to release a foldable iPhone. There have been many rumors circulating, but there has been no official launch or announcement.
"When Apple enters the [foldable phone] market, it is predicted to significantly affect growth in the foldable phone sector," said Riby Lu, an analyst at research firm TrendForce.
