KOMPUTER JADUL-, Israel's State Economic Affairs Committee has given final approval to plans to build an international airport in the southern region of the country. The new Israeli airport will be located not far from the Gaza border, where Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023.

According to a draft bill awaiting approval by the Israeli parliament, as reported by Reuters and Al Arabiya, Monday (3/24/2025), the new airport will be built in the city of Nevatim, about 65 kilometers or less than an hour's drive from the Gaza border.

The new airport will be close to an Israeli military air base in the Negev desert area, which is home to the F-35 stealth fighter jet fleet. The base was targeted by an Iranian missile attack last October.

The bill submitted to the Israeli parliament states that the new airport, which is about 132 kilometers from Tel Aviv, will take seven years to build and is expected to handle up to 15 million passengers annually.

The project is intended to help ease traffic congestion at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport, and boost the economy in southern Israel by creating some 50,000 jobs, especially for the nearby Bedouin.

The Israeli military and security establishment have opposed the new airport project, due to its proximity to the air base.
