KOMPUTER JADUL-, US President Donald Trump has promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to work together to find additional Patriot missile defense systems for Ukraine. The White House made the promise following a telephone conversation between the two leaders on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. The American-made Patriot missile system has been Ukraine's mainstay to counter waves of Russian missile and drone attacks.
"President Trump agreed to work with him to find out what is available, particularly in Europe," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, as quoted from the White House YouTube channel, Thursday (3/20/2025). Trump and Zelensky held a telephone conversation on March 19 regarding a 30-day ceasefire agreement.
It was their first personal conversation after a verbal exchange in the Oval Office on February 28, and after Trump's telephone conversation with Russian President Vladmir Putin that took place the day before, on March 18, 2025. After the telephone call, Putin claimed that he had agreed to a 30-day ceasefire for attacks on energy infrastructure.
However, that same evening, on March 19, Russia conducted a large-scale drone strike targeting energy infrastructure and other facilities. Ukraine also reportedly carried out attacks on Russia. Trump briefed Zelensky on his conversation with Putin. The US and Ukrainian presidents agreed to a “partial ceasefire on energy.”
Trump called his conversation with Zelensky “very good” and noted that much of it was based on his conversation yesterday with Putin. “With the goal of reconciling the demands and needs of Russia and Ukraine,” Trump said.
Zelensky said they agreed to discuss the technical details of a partial ceasefire—refraining from attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure. The technical team will reportedly meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days. “To discuss extending the ceasefire to the Black Sea, on the path to a full ceasefire,” the White House said.
