KOMPUTER JADUL-, Global technology giant Google reportedly paid a number of its artificial intelligence (AI) division employees to be unemployed for a year. This was done in order to prevent them from joining competitors such as Open AI and Microsoft.

This is a fact that the battle for AI talent is very tight. So Google prefers to give a year of paid vacation to some employees rather than let them work for competitors.

According to a report from Business Insider, Google's AI division, DeepMind, has implemented an aggressive non-compete agreement against several AI staff in the UK.

In the contract, they are prohibited from working at competing companies for up to one year and still receive a salary. This condition makes some researchers or workers in the AI field feel unfair.

Vice President of AI at Microsoft, Nando de Freitas, revealed that many DeepMind staff contacted him in a frustrated state because they had difficulty getting out of the contract.

"Dear @GoogDeepMind ers, First of all, congratulations on the impressive new models. Every week one of you (employees) contacts me desperately asking how to get out of this policy. Also asking me to get a job because your manager has made it clear that this is the way to get promoted, but I don't respond," wrote @NandoDF on X. March 26, 2025

Nando suggested that DeepMind staff support each other and speak directly to their leaders.

He also condemned the practice of non-compete contracts, especially when enforced by an American company in Europe.

"Don't sign this contract. No American company should have that much power, especially in Europe. This is an abuse of power, which does not justify any end," he added.
